We made a quick trip today. Just as we were loading up, an Iraqi Army squad showed up. We took them along on our patrol.
We headed through 14th Ramadan to the Route Asp bridge. From there, part of the platoon walked with the IA squad to a village called Islah 2. The Son’s of Iraq (CLC’s) wanted to chase AQI with Iraqi Army vehicles, if we would give them vehicles and supplies. LT Schardt told us to let the Iraqi Army deal with them.
One of the SOI’s said that the Iraqi Army isn’t to be trusted, and the IA squad leader got pissed about it.
We didn’t stay out for very long, so it was a nice short day.
Tonight’s patrol, as well as tomorrow’s, has been cancelled. We are going out to our new JSS site for 5 days. YUCK! I don’t know if I’ve mentioned which site they chose; it’s the shitty one. The last place we went with the dilapidated building. Go figure!
I just remembered a story from our Abayachi (Abaiji) trip that I had forgotten to write about. I jumped out of the Stryker at one point, and I heard a metallic clank on the ground. I looked down and saw a grenade spoon hanging from my vest with no grenade attached.
For a couple seconds, I just thought, Well, son of a bitch. That sucks.
Thankfully it was only a smoke grenade, and the grenade body had just come unscrewed from the fuse. It reminds me of the time I did a rucksack flop on a dud Russian grenade in Afghanistan back in March 2002. I was so tired, I didn’t bother to get up. That’s another story for another day though.
When we got back into Taji today, we went in the way that we always go, coming from MSR Tampa. The Iraqi Army guys didn’t know how to get back to their part of the camp. We waited, and had to watch them because the Iraqi Army is not to be trusted, for a couple of hours until their handlers, a MiTT team showed up to take them back to their side of the base.
Taaga about flipped out on a guy today.
The guy said, “Give me water.”
T said, “Why should I give you water? You just got paid. Get the fuck out of here.”
I was a little surprised by that. He’s usually pretty mellow and willing to throw stuff out to the locals.
Our whole platoon is on edge right now though. Even the PL and PSG. Morale is low, because of stuff going on at battalion, I think. Rumors are going around that CSM Ordonio may come back. Once you’re high enough, you can fuck up and keep your job, I guess.
We’re supposed to do a weigh-in sometime in the next couple of days. I’m sure I’ll be over as usual. I’ll never be thin. I’d love to lose about 30 pounds, but that’s the story of my life.
I got a Harley-Davidson screensaver and a digital parts catalog today. I can’t wait to get my bike. I’m so excited about it. I hope it all goes as planned.
Oh, they told us that we aren’t allowed to take cameras outside the wire anymore. I understand the reasoning, but it’s still bullshit.
