5 March 2008 (CAMP TAJI, IRAQ)

Today was supposed to be a recovery day from our trip to Abaiji. We had vehicle and weapon maintenance, and time to get some laundry and things taken care of.

The chow halls were closed at lunchtime today. Apparently there was some sort of bomb threat. We all went and grabbed fast food from the stands behind the PX. I got Popeye’s chicken, and it was pretty damn good.

I popped into the PX and got some sandpaper so that I can start sanding my surfboard. I’m hoping to get that cleaned up and ready to be painted. I want to do just one patrol with it strapped to the side of my Stryker. I really need to have that photo to take home with me.

We’ve been hearing a lot of talk about new soldiers and personnel moves around the company and battalion. It sounds like our platoon is set to get 3 or 4 new joes. Almazan and Oineza are going to be moved to the M240s. I may be moved to a weapons squad leader or platoon sergeant job. If that happens, they are thinking Capelli will take over for my squad, and Morado would take over for Capelli as a sort of squad leader for the vehicle crews.

We’ll see what happens, but my guys are not happy about all this.

LT Schardt asked me what I wanted, and I told him that regardless of the SFC promotion list and platoon sergeant openings, I just want to stay in 1st platoon. I don’t know what will happen.

Apparently Doc Yasko and Heckman (Lloyd) were both evacuated to Baghdad today. Doc was sent out because of his ankle, and Lloyd was having symptoms similar to Bobby Gene’s. Again, the docs thought it sounds like appendicitis. Who knows?

I checked out some Harley stuff today, and watched a movie in my room. Overall, it was a pretty relaxing day. We have day and night patrols scheduled for tomorrow.
